Luna

Palo Alto, CA

  Breed: Pembroke Welsh Corgi

  Weight: 20 lbs

  Age: 7 years old

  Gender: Female

I live in Palo Alto with my Corgi, Luna. We like to go on walks in the neighborhood, hiking, and visiting the beach. My partner and I live in an apartment and can watch another dog, but prefer if the dog is a similar or smaller size than Luna. Luna does the best with routine - if possible, going out for walks and her pee / poop around the same time everyday (when you're at home). She is very friendly with humans and is somewhat reactive to dogs but with a proper introduction she'll be fine in your home. She is very food motivated and enjoys naps. She has some noise anxiety, so if you have a fenced yard she'll have plenty of physical activity through that and a walk is unnecessary, otherwise daily walks in a quiet neighborhood are sufficient.

  Weight: 55 lbs

  Age: 6 years old

  Gender: Female

Dot is a 5-year-old, 55-pound American Bully. She's crate trained, loves people and dogs, and doesn't bark (seriously). We recently lost our second dog, a 45-pound chihuahua-pitbull mix, so we are familiar with having two dogs at a time and would enjoy another pup in the house on occasion. We have a smallish fenced yard, great for potty breaks, light zoomies, sniffing, and squirrel viewing. Our human household includes a 16-year-old and his parents, one of whom is a stay-at-home parent.

Tizzy

Palo Alto, CA

  Breed: Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

  Weight: 20 lbs

  Age: 6 years old

  Gender: Female

Tizzy is a super chill dog who just wants to be near people. She usually sleeps most of the day and goes for a short walk in the evening, but she's happy to go along on excursions. She gets along with other small dogs, but she's not especially interested in playing, so quiet dogs would be the best fit. She is fine being home alone for 4-6 hours, but she is used to sleeping in bed with us. I work from home, so there's almost always someone home. We have pet rabbits, so we can only sit for dogs who won't jump a baby gate.

Ethan

Palo Alto, CA

  Breed: Maltipoo

  Weight: 10 lbs

  Age: 4 years old

  Gender: Male

Hi! We have a small 8lb Maltipoo dog, Ethan is very friendly and affectionate. He loves people, children, and other dogs. Ethan’s very gentle and low energy, he loves to take nap. I work from home most of the time, so my hours are pretty flexible, and could give him potty break every 4-5 hours. I bring him for a walk once or twice per day at the neighborhood. He’s on leash at all time when going to the backyard or when on walk. Ethan has been recently attacked at the dog park, so we’d not be going there anymore. We’d prefer to host 1 dog at a time, or at most two dogs from the same family. We’d be happy to return the favor for the same amount of time for someone else!

  Weight: 35 lbs

  Age: 2 years old

  Gender: Male

We are a family with two kiddos, no cats. Wilkie is a young adopted rescue (under a year) who is wonderful with kids and other dogs. He's a good sleeper but usually just on his bed. He takes his meals in a crate just for fun but isn't fully crate trained for nighttime yet. He isn't destructive at all, he's playful but submissive and obedient. He doesn't want to be left completely alone for long periods of time (more than 2 hrs) yet but might be just fine if there is another dog in his company. And he's not destructive or anything if left. He's never had any accidents in the house. Only hosting preferences are dogs that aren't super vocal since we rent.

Fennec

Palo Alto, CA

  Breed: German Shepherd

  Weight: 50 lbs

  Age: 1 year old

  Gender: Male

Although we usually leave our dog with our housemates, there may be an occasion where we need to find him another boarding option, and we thought finding a fun family to leave him with would be awesome :). Fennec is a great dog, loooooves balls, gets excited when new people come to visit, but is generally pretty chill. Likes other dogs (but likes balls better) and adores his people. Wants to play with cats, but will mostly ignore them or just playfully poke at them until they swat him to let him know they've had enough. We have a great back yard and garden that Fennec (and guest pups) can spend time in, and occasionally, we take him over to one of the two nearby dog parks to play (or to chase balls or to chase other dogs that are chasing balls :)).

Louie is a 4-year old standard size labradoodle with the sweetest personality (I often joke that he’s a human in a dog suit). Louie loves all dogs, big or small, and is great with kiddos. He loves his morning walks just as much as he enjoys snoozing on the couch during the day. She needs 2-3 walks a day for at least a total of 3 miles, but she will gladly walk 5 or 6 miles and play a lot. As of 1/23, she has recall, is improving at stay, knows take it, leave it, sit, lay down, and down. We are working on skills regularly. You need to be willing to use cheese, meat, or other high stake treats (I will provide) as her leave it and stay treat We will provide all the doggy treats (and can provide cheese). She's loving and sweet, but is used to being with her humans most of the time. We have a house and backyard, and we're excited to try a trade. Your dog: Not more than 25 lbs. Shedding is fine. Must get along well with Zahra and like talking walks (ideally at least 4 miles daily) and playing (at home and in the dog park). We would do a meet and greet and a test playdate and overnight before doing longer stays. Prefer a dog match up within 20 minute drive of Palo Alto if at all possible, but will go farther for the right fit.

  1. Clean and Safe Environment: Check for cleanliness, proper ventilation, and secure fencing to guarantee your dog's safety and well-being.
  2. Experienced Staff: Inquire about the qualifications and experience of the staff members who will be caring for your dog. Trained professionals can handle emergencies and provide proper care.
  3. Health Requirements: Confirm that the facility requires all dogs to be up-to-date on vaccinations to prevent the spread of diseases among the canine guests.
  4. Daily Routine And Exercise: Ask about the daily routine, exercise, and playtime your dog will receive. Physical activity and mental stimulation are vital for a happy stay.
  5. Reviews And Recommendations: Read online reviews and seek recommendations from other dog owners to get insights into the experiences of pets who have stayed at the facility.

DIY Dog Boarding: Tips For Safe At-Home Stays

If you're considering caring for other dogs at your home as part of a boarding community, there are a few essential tips to ensure a successful and safe experience:

  • Create A Safe Space: Set up a designated area where visiting dogs can feel comfortable and secure. Provide water, bedding, and toys for entertainment.
  • Meet And Greet: Prior to a dog's stay, arrange a meet and greet to ensure compatibility between your dog and the visitor. This helps prevent conflicts during their stay.
  • Clear Guidelines: Communicate clear guidelines to visiting dog owners, including feeding schedules, exercise routines, and any special instructions.
  • Emergency Plans: Have a plan in place in case of emergencies, such as a local vet's contact information and basic first aid supplies.
  • Manage Introductions: Introduce visiting dogs gradually and in a controlled manner to prevent territorial behavior or aggression.

Keeping Separation Anxiety At Bay: Strategies For A Stress-Free Stay

Separation anxiety can affect dogs during their boarding stay. Here are some strategies to help ease separation anxiety and ensure your dog's comfort:

Familiar Items

Pack familiar items like their favorite toy or blanket to provide a sense of security.

Positive Departures

Keep departures calm and positive to avoid triggering anxiety. A relaxed goodbye can set the tone for their stay.

Trial Runs

Prior to an extended stay, consider leaving your dog for shorter periods to help them adjust to being away from you.

Regular Updates

Some facilities offer photo or video updates, which can provide reassurance that your dog is doing well.

Transitional Objects

Leave an item with your scent, like a worn T-shirt, to comfort your dog during your absence.

Choosing The Right Dog Boarding Community: Questions To Ask

When considering joining a dog boarding community, asking the right questions is essential. Here are some inquiries to help you make an informed decision:

  1. How Does the Rotation Work? Understand how the dog-sitting rotation is organized and if it aligns with your travel plans.
  2. Emergency Protocols: Inquire about emergency plans in case a dog requires medical attention or encounters any issues during their stay.
  3. Behavior And Compatibility: Ask about how the community assesses the behavior and compatibility of different dogs to ensure a harmonious experience.
  4. Communication Channels: Determine how the community communicates updates and important information among members.
  5. Membership Requirements: Understand any membership fees, obligations, or expectations associated with being part of the community.
