Nina Simone
Durham, NCBreed: Yorkiepoo
Weight: 5 lbs
Age: 5 years old
Gender: Female
I adopted Nina in July 2024. Nina was found as a stray, badly malnourished with bendy bones, soft nails, and matted fur weighing as much as she did. because of how bad a shape she was in, her vets thought she was in survival mode for a very long time where she either head or defended her self to stay alive. On top of this, they believe her growth was very stunted, on top of being toy/small breed - she weighs only 3.3lbs! Because of this, she has some fear based reactivity that we are actively working on with a trainer. Nina is now happy and healthy! She is 95% wonderful, loving, silly dog. The other 5% are just typical dog quirks but need to be extra cautious about due to her microscopic size. She is leash trained, house trained, and crate trained, and overall very easy day to day. Nina is alert and attentive and learns well by watching from a distance. She is quiet overall, but does take her role as the guard dog very seriously and will bark with a knock on the door and stop barking as soon as she sees any person who might be willing to give her attention of treats. She can also be vocal when begging for treats, when happy, or playing - all of which is short lived. She loves people and attention, but is happy to rest in a different room in a dog bed or crate. Basic training on my own and with a professional trainer has been extraordinarily easy. Nina is smart and picks up things very quickly. We continue to work with a trainer on fear based behaviors with the overall goal of diminishing her stress. She is apprehensive of: anything involving handling of her head, such as being groomed, or dressed, getting a harness on or off, and being surprised such as being petted while she is sleeping. These things are easy to resolve with treats, sweet talking, and moving slowly and carefully. Things she is still fearful of and does not tolerate well: robot, vacuums, children, big dogs in her face that do not heed her warnings. She is mostly indifferent to other dogs that give her space, and is interested in playing with XS dogs that play gently, especially when Nina can be the one to initiate play. Nina is a wonderful dog with a social spirit, and it is important to me that she socializes properly while supporting her confidence, instead of throwing her into a larger group setting and expect her to cope. She has come such a long way and only has a little bit to go, which I believe is possible with your help!
